Excel Study Guide

Terminology and General Knowledge:

  • Be able to identify formula bar, menu bar, tool bar, title bar, scroll bar, task bar
  • Be familiar with common terminology used in Excel (ex: active cell, row, column, etc.)
  • Know what  causes (and how to fix) common problems in Excel
  • Know three types of data that can be contained in a cell
  • Know the three reasons main reasons why Excel is used
  • Know what the auto fill tool is used for 

Application: (during the skills application part of the test, you will be able to use any part of Excel help)

  • Be able to create a column, line or pie chart and correctly label it (chart title, x and y axis, correct scale, data labels if appropriate)
  • Be able to sort and/or filter data in a data in a data table 
  • Be able to do the following calculations in Excel (add, subtract, multiply, divide, average)
  • How to use AutoSum
  • In a data table be able to use the following features: character formatting, paragraph formatting, border, fill, format cells, merge and center, increase/decrease columns and/or rows
  • Add/delete rows and columns in Excel
  • Copy and paste cells in Excel
  • Understand how to format cells that contain text (wrap text, orientation)
  • Understand how to format cells that contain numbers (currency, dates)
  • Move to a different worksheet within a workbook
  • Rename a worksheet
  • Add headers and/or footers to a spreadsheet
  • How to print only the chart in a spreadsheet
  • Use print preview and spell check
