Troubleshooting Procedures

Symptom or Problem

Possible Solution

PC won’t accept password

The user name for any student PC on the SPX campus is “student” (omit the quotes) and the password is “password” (omit the quotes). Make sure the CAPS LOCK key is not on.

PC is running exceptionally slow

Reboot (Start, Shut down, Restart)

PC has stalled or is hung up

Reboot (Start, Shut down, Restart)

Student has lost work that was believed to have been saved

Most “lost” work isn’t actually lost at all but, put in the wrong place. First place to look for lost work is in the My Documents folder on the PC you were working on when you thought you saved your work.  It’s likely you forgot to place your document in your student folder on the correct drive.

Printer won’t print

  • Check to make sure the printer is turned on

  • Check the printer. Are there indicator lights on? (out of paper, misfeed)

Floppy disk from home (or school) not being recognized

FDID (Floppy disk is dead!) Floppies can be a risky way to transport information from school to home and then back again. If the floppy you are trying to access isn’t working, try another PC, or another floppy.

Better ways to transport files are, flash drive, e-mail as an attachment using your Think.com e-mail account (only), upload the document to your Think.com account, burn the document to a CD at home (gets a little expensive)

I don't see the drive that I need to find my folder.

Reboot (Start, Shut down, Restart)

Can’t get to my folder on the server and I've already started working on a document that I don't want to lose. If this problem occurs, save your work to the My Documents folder on the PC you’re working on. Shut the PC down, restart and then copy your document from My Docs to your student folder on the server.
I didn't bring my pencil - do you have something to write with? There are a bunch of pencils at the front of the lab by the Smart Board. Help yourself. If you need a pencil to keep - keep it! :)
