Mission Statement

Teachers in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis integrate technology throughout the curriculum. By using technology as a tool to create new opportunities for learning, teachers prepare students to model Christian values in a technological world.

Teacher Competencies

1. Basic Operations and Concepts

  • Identify basic parts of the computer

  • Understand basic technology terms, i.e., e-mail, floppy disk, CD-ROM, software, hardware

  • Navigate the computer's desktop

  • Proper care for hardware/software

  • Apply basic keyboarding skills

  • Manage electronic files, i.e., creating/deleting folders, copying/deleting files

2. Social, ethical, and human issues

  • Use simple publishing software to create banners, signs and cards.

  • Enforce the school's Acceptable Use Policy

  • Practice Internet safety.

  • Use proper citation form for electronic resources.

  • Know, abide by and enforce copyright restrictions on software and other electronic information.

3. Technology productivity tools

  • Utilize word processing skills (create, save, retrieve, print)

  • Create parent and classroom communications using word processing including formatting text and important graphics, i.e., newsletters, e-mail communications

  • Use digital cameras and scanner

4. Technology communication tools

  • Navigate the Internet

  • Practice proper netiquette

  • Practice Internet safety

  • Send and receive e-mail messages

5. Technology research tools

  • Use electronic research tools (dictionary, encyclopdedia, Internet)

6. Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools

  • Select and evaluate appropriate software for your grade

Grade Level Specific Competencies for Teachers

Listed below are specific competencies for teachers relevant to the skills introduced at each grade level. Please note that ALL teachers need to be familiar with all competencies in the preceding grade levels. At each specific grade level each teacher should be able to:

Kindergarten/First Grade:

  • Use basic drawing/paint software

Second Grade:

  • Create projects using multi-media software

Third Grade:

  • Create simple spreadsheets

  • Utilize proper techniques and/or software for teaching keyboarding

Fourth Grade:

  • Use basic network terminology

  • Demonstrate proper resource citation form

  • Demonstrate efficient search techniques (Boolean logic)

  • Create a database

Fifth Grade:

  • Use advanced word processing formatting

  • Create spreadsheets/graphs including the use of the spreadsheet function

Sixth through Eighth Grade:

  • Use spreadsheet formulas

  • Create a basic web page

  • Employ multitasking

  • Use e-mail and on-line discussions for classroom projects

  • Use advanced database techniques
